As much as I love my EOS 50D and its super lenses, it can be quite a weight to lug around on a daily basis. So, not too long ago, I bought a wee point-and-shoot digital camera, a Canon Ixus 115 HS. With loads of functions and perfectly pocket-sized, I find it a real treat to use. It goes with me every time I step out of the house – even if I am just going up the road to Tesco!
It’s also got a “Fireworks” setting. Well, if tonight isn’t the night for testing this one out, then I guess I’d have to wait for Hogmany or next year’s Edinburgh Festival!
The 5th November is celebrated annually across Britain and is also known as Guy Fawkes Night, or Bonfire Night. It marks the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, where King James VI (Scotland)/I (England) was the target of a Catholic-led attack on the House of Lords, in 1605.
Mum and I walked up to Calton Hill to watch the Meadowbank Fireworks Display. It turned out to be quite far away, so camera was on full zoom. Next year I might actually fork out the £6 to get up close and personal – and take the big camera (with tripod)! We still had fun, catching some “sparkler” action, too.

Made some interesting shots huh?
Yup, interesting is probably the best way to describe them!! I’m quite happy with them, even though they are far from perfect. I do think I’d like to be closer to the fireworks the next time – or swoosh the cameras so that there was more of a “light-painting” effect. Oh, hindsight – where were you earlier!!?
Amazing fire work pics!
Thanks Xandi – I had a lot of fun too! I might have to try this more often
These are great Lu! I especially like the fourth and last images. I should have gone outside to have a go but was too tired! Next year perhaps!
Gosh, I’m a bit slow in responding… apologies!
Thankfully we had quite a clear night and the show started at 7:30pm – so not too late, either.
I’ve (tried to) watch fireworks displays in the past, where the fireworks exploded ABOVE cloud level…!
Wow, some great shots here. I have a terrible time shooting fireworks so I give you props. Love the white ones at the beginning.
Thank you 2Summers – it was just a bit of fun, and really an attempt to see what this little camera could do. It’s, otherwise, all trial and error!!
The white ones are from the hand-held sparklers – so I was able to get closer to the action and therefore not dependent on zooming in. They are much sharper and make for some fun “light squiggles”!
Very cool photos! I also have a Canon compact camera. And it also goes with me everywhere . . . usually. Willie has taken it with him to Australia.
Oh no! He’d better take plenty of photos with it then, to justify him taking it!
